The Cyr wheel is a metal ring made up of individual segments that are usually firmly bolted together and used in its rigid, circular form. Fenja performs with her wheel without the screws, making it unstable and fragile, questioning the idea of perfection. Her wheel thus becomes an entirely different apparatus: sometimes strangely bent, sometimes fluid like a snake, sometimes dismantled into its individual parts. Fenja Barteldres’ journey began in the vibrant world of Circus Ragazzi, where she refined her skills before falling head over heels—quite literally—into Cyr wheel at the age of 14. She took her talent across the Atlantic to Canada, honing her craft at the École de Cirque de Québec and proving that her passion knows no borders. And just when it seemed she could not get any more impressive, she topped it all off with a Bachelor’s degree in Circus Arts from Codarts in Rotterdam.
